19: Resting in God’s Commands

Week 3 – Jeff Maness – January 20, 2019

God’s commands are not meant to be restrictive, they are meant to bring us rest. So often, we view God’s commands as something that keeps us from something in life, but they actually release us to experience the fullness of life that God desires.

19: Commands

Big Idea: God’s commands are not meant to restrict us, they are meant to bring us rest.

Big Question: Why can I rest in God’s commands?

Main Scripture: Psalm 19:7-11

Psalm 19:7-8a 7 The instructions (The Laws) of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart.

Psalm 119:143 143 As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands.

1. They are refreshing

Isaiah 55:10-13 10 “The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. 11 It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. 12 You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands! 13 Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow. Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up. These events will bring great honor to the LORD’s name; they will be an everlasting sign of his power and love.”

Psalm 19:8b-9 8b The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living. 9 Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair.

Psalm 19:7b The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

2. They are reliable

Psalm 18:30 30 As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.

Proverbs 4:13 Take hold of my instructions; don’t let them go. Guard them, for they are the key to life.

2 Timothy 3:16 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

Psalm 19:10-11 10 They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. 11 They (God’s laws) are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.

3. They are a reward

Psalm 119:127 27 Truly, I love your commands more than gold, even the finest gold.
