Glory Gives Us a Purpose: Applying Paul’s Assumptions

Week 2 – Jeff Maness – August 18, 2019

Unspoken assumptions have a way of creating unmet expectations which can lead to unbelievable amounts of conflict, disappointment and pain. In Paul’s letter to the Romans he voiced some assumptions he had for Christians in the church. What we see is this: The things Paul assumed from Christians in the Church we should apply as Christians in the Church.

Glory: Assumptions

Romans 11:36 36 For everything comes from him (God) and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.

Main Scripture: Romans 15:23-33

Big Idea: What Paul assumed from Christians in the church, we should apply as Christians in the Church.

Big Question: What should we apply in the Church?

Romans 15:23-29 23 But now I have finished my work in these regions, and after all these long years of waiting, I am eager to visit you. 24 I am planning to go to Spain, and when I do, I will stop off in Rome. And after I have enjoyed your fellowship for a little while, you can provide for my journey. 25 But before I come, I must go to Jerusalem to take a gift to the believers there.

“You can provide for my journey.”

1. To provide for the ministry

Weekly Budget Need: $33,605

Weekly Avg Offering: $37,405

Psalm 24:1 1 The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.

Proverbs 3:9 9 Honor (worship) the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.

Malachi 3:10 10 “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!”

Romans 15:30-31 30 Dear brothers and sisters, I urge you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to join in my struggle by praying to God for me. Do this because of your love for me, given to you by the Holy Spirit. 31 Pray that I will be rescued from those in Judea who refuse to obey God. Pray also that the believers there will be willing to accept the donation I am taking to Jerusalem.

2. To pray for the ministry

1. That we would never lose a staff member due to immorality.

2. That we would be united in thought and purpose.

3. That God would bring us people that nobody else wants or people who believe nobody would want them and then enable us to love them like He does.

4. That God would use our church to save people and set them apart by faith in Him.

5. That God’s presence and power would not only be in the church but be evident through our church.

Romans 15:32-33 32 Then, by the will of God, I will be able to come to you with a joyful heart, and we will be an encouragement to each other. 33 And now may God, who gives us his peace, be with you all. Amen.
