Grace and Truth: Faith and Sexuality

Week 3 – John Wilson – February 17, 2019

What is the relationship between the LGBT community and the church? Can someone be gay and Christian? In a world splintered by the conversation surrounding faith and sexuality, we seek to respond to LGBT people in grace and truth.

What is the relationship between being gay and the Christian faith?

People to be Loved by Dr. Preston Sprinkle

“The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 NIV

“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 NIV

Historic Christian Sexual Ethic: Marriage is intended for two sexually different people (man and woman), and any sex or sexual activity is intended for and blessed only in that union.

“Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.” Leviticus 18:22 NIV

“If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” Leviticus 20:13 NIV

“Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.” Romans 2:26-27

“Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NIV

“We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine.” 1 Timothy 1:9-10 NIV

arsenokoitai = arsen + koites

Slide 11:

“Maybe the problem isn’t that gay Christians have received an impossible task. Maybe the problem is that so many straight Christians have given themselves a task that is too easy, a cross that’s too bearable.” – Greg Coles, Single, Gay, Christian

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 NIV
